All 6 Melona Flavors Ranked
After coming back from my first trip to Japan, I became a lot more interested in different Asian snacks. They had a lot more exotic flavors and were very unique.
It used to be hard to find these in the international section at grocery stores; however, it seems like a lot of people have become interested in them over the last few years, because you can easily find them in grocery stores now.
One of these brands is Melona. Their ice cream bars are very popular in Korea and have become fairly popular in North America recently. To the point where even Costco was selling them.
I had been wanting to get all the Melona flavors ranked for a while, but they are typically expensive. Coming in at $7.97 or $6.97 (for 8 bars of 70mL) depending on the flavor. Lucky for me, they went on sale to $4.98 last week so I scooped up all the flavors.
Melona is made by Binggrae, which is a big Korean food and beverage company. They are well known for their banana and strawberry milk flavored drinks.
Let’s get into our task for today of getting all the Melona flavors ranked!
6. Mango
Unfortunately, this ice cream bar smells and tastes very artificial. It doesn’t even taste like mango to be honest. It reminds me of mango flavored gum that I used to buy that used to taste really bad and artificial.
There were no redeeming qualities for this one. I personally gave this a 2/10 but the other taster gave it a 6/10. Which is why we ended up at 4. 😑
Score: 4
5. Purple Yam
We actually had the same score for this one, but we had different opinions.
Me: I couldn’t really feel a specific flavor. There was something there, but it was not very distinct. I also don’t like the violet color. I do feel a milk flavor, but other than that and some sweetness, I couldn’t really figure out the flavor. Not bad, but very confusing.
Also, the idea of a yam flavored ice cream wasn’t very appetizing to me.
Taster 2: the flavor is moderate and tastes like raw yams. Its not really a pleasant taste. I didn’t like it. It’s still a tolerable flavor, and can be eaten. The light sweetness might make the overall experience better. If you like yams though, you might like this.
Score: 6
4. Banana
If you have ever had Binggrae’s banana flavored milk, this tastes exactly the same. I personally didn’t like it that much, so I didn’t really enjoy this one.
My issue with this flavor is that, while it is very strong, it’s too artificial. I suspect a lot of people might like this flavor since it’s one of the more popular ones, but I personally wouldn’t go for it again.
Score: 7
3. Melon
The melon taste is very accurate and the smell is spot on. It’s extremely realistic! Sometimes it literally feels like you’re eating a cold melon. It even mimics the taste of the melon when you are close to the seed.
Very interesting experience. I have never tasted something that was this close to reality. It’s pretty refreshing and would be nice on a hot summer day.
I don’t particularly enjoy melon that much, so even though the flavor is a masterpiece in artificial flavoring, I wouldn’t get it again.
Score: 7.5
2. Strawberry
Similar to the banana flavor, this one tastes exactly like the flavored milk drink. I REALLY like the drink so this was an absolute hit for me.
It tastes very delicious, and while there is a bit of an artificial after taste, the strawberry flavor is fantastic.
It’s very different than typical milk ice creams that you will have. Mostly because the strawberry flavor is very prominent and the milk flavor is quite subtle.
Score: 8
1. Coconut
Oh man, this one smells incredible!
The smell and taste are super accurate. It smells surprisingly fresh too, like I just opened a bag of shredded coconut.
I took a quick look at the ingredients and noticed that the second ingredient was coconut milk, and this REALLY showed because it tasted just like coconut milk, that is perfectly sweetened.
This was a very impressive flavor and was very refreshing. Perfect for a hot summer day.
Score: 9
Final Thoughts
While I have to applaud Melona for having original flavors, I was quite disappointed with their mango and yam flavors. I was more so disappointed with Mango because I’ve had a lot of good mango ice creams before.
The coconut, strawberry, and melon were absolutely phenomenal though. I highly recommend that you try these out.
Compared to regular ice creams, Melona didn’t feel as heavy which was a good thing, because it’s perfect for summer days. This is because the water content in these is much higher which is nice.
You can see in the image below that Water is the first ingredient and milk comes in much later.
Also, the ice-cream is interestingly somewhat bendable without breaking. Not sure why, but interesting nonetheless.
