5 Best Pocky Flavors Ranked (2024)
Ever since I visited Japan, Pocky became one of my favorite snacks that I would try from time to time. But with such an incredible variety, finding the best Pocky flavor can sometimes be impossible. While Pocky has some unique flavors ranging from cantaloupe to blueberry, it has five main flavors that are available everywhere.
What sets Pocky apart from a lot of other brands is how good their biscuit is and how accurate their flavors are. The complete opposite of this, is Cheez It, where the cracker itself doesn’t taste good and relies heavily on the flavoring.
I also really like Pocky’s packaging and choice of colors, it’s very cool and unique.
What is Pocky?
Pocky is a Japanese biscuit stick that is dipped in a flavor coating. Although the parent company, Glico, launched a similar concept in 1922, it was in 1966 that it was officially launched as the Pocky brand. Pocky is a very popular Japanese snack domestically and internationally.
Pocky is known for its undipped end and easily snapping biscuit (and the accompanying sound) which makes it really easy to eat. The undipped end makes it easy to eat the biscuits mess-free.
Let’s dive into the best Pocky Flavors that you can easily find outside of Japan.
Best Pocky Flavors Ranked
1. Cookies and Cream
What. A. Smell. Incredible! It’s a really nice vanilla and cream/ice-cream smell. We literally spent 10 seconds just taking in the smell because of how good it was. When it came to the taste though we were pretty divided. One of us gave it a 9 and the other 6.5.
Comments from the taster who gave it a 9: compared to the other ones, this one seemed to have the thickest coating which made the cream flavor much stronger.
Comments from the taster who gave it a 6.5: the flavor is good, but I didn’t really enjoy it. This was purely personal preference as I thought the cookies and cream flavor here wasn’t what I was used to.
Overall, this is the best Pocky flavor for us!
Score: 7.75
2. Strawberry
The strawberry Pocky had a very strong synthetic strawberry smell. It wasn’t a bad smell but it was very artificial. The biscuit tastes pretty good on its own and the crunchy strawberry flavor tastes really good. I also really appreciate how colorful it is, the coloring is very vibrant and cheerful.
Again, it felt a bit on the lighter side and could definitely benefit from a thicker coating. If the flavor was stronger or the coating was thicker this would get a perfect score.
Score: 7
3. Chocolate
The chocolate smell is nice and very strong on these Pocky sticks. It feels like a mix of regular and dark chocolate coating. The chocolate flavor was really nice and also felt like there was a bit of a dark chocolate flavor in there but it wasn’t accompanied by any bitterness.
This also happens to be reddit’s favorite flavor in our recent poll. Chocolate was one of Pocky’s earliest flavors introduced.
Score: 7
4. Green Tea
As someone that doesn’t particularly enjoy green tea, I thought these matcha flavored pocky sticks were going to be way worse. However, the smell was actually really nice. The flavor is okay for someone that doesn’t like green tea, but really nice if you do.
The flavor wasn’t as strong as the coating seemed thin. If these were regular biscuits with more coating they would be pretty good. Part of what makes it good is that the green tea flavor isn’t too strong or bitter. Instead, the cream flavor is more prominent with a hint of green tea in it.
Score: 6
5. Chocolate Banana
The banana cream smell on this one is ridiculously good, they really nailed the banana smell. The biscuit itself tastes more chocolatey but overall I find the combination isn’t that great. Each of them on their own would taste great, but combined they aren’t that good.
If this was given to me I wouldn’t mind having it, but I would definitely prefer any of the other flavors. This biscuit and the cookies and cream one had the darkest biscuit out of the five we tried.
Score: 6
Overall Impressions
You can’t go wrong with any of these Japanese Pocky flavors. Pocky is also incredible good at getting the smell right. The packaging looks really nice and very different from typical north American packaging. Pocky is a good treat for yourself or family and I feel like kids will especially enjoy it.
However, we can’t see it as a regular snack because of its price point. Additionally, most of these flavors would benefit from a thicker coating to give the taste a little kick.
